The Cross Canada Adventure
On Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 22:00 ZULU, aircraft from around the globe will start their engines in Tofino, British Columbia to begin another epic aviation expedition across Canada. All of the flights listed below are contained in this Downloadable ZIP File.

The World's Toughest Airfields
Hello fellow adventurous flyers and welcome to the Worlds Toughest Airfields. I invite you to come fly with me to test your skills and nerves on these flights. All of the flights listed below are contained in this Downloadable ZIP File.

INSTALLATION:
Unzip the contents of this file into the folder where you store your flights... typically: For FS9:
    C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\Flight Simulator Files\
    C:\User\yourname\My Documents\Flight Simulator Files\
For FSX:
    C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\
    C:\User\yourname]\My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\
Loading the GPS Route
Now that you have downloaded and saved the flight plans (PLN files), you need to load the flight into the simulator. Do the following:
  • Bring up your simulator
  • Click on FREE FLIGHT
  • Select and load the aircraft you will be flying on this leg
  • Set the Weather to Real World Weather
  • Click on Flight Planner
  • Click on Load...
  • Select the Flight Plan (e.g. CFWM-001-Tofino to Nainaimo)
  • Click Open
  • *** CAUTION - DO NOT PRESS FIND ROUTE ***
  • Click OK
A pop-up box will appear...

  • Click "Yes"
  • Click "Fly Now"
Taxi to a Parking Spot
Start your aircraft and taxi to your desired location in the parking area. I recommend executing a "Restart Cold and Dark" and then run through the Pre-Flight, Before Startup and Startup checklists to get your aircraft ready for the pending fun!

Save and Load your Flight
Next, from the simulator's main menu, click on Flights > Save to SAVE your flight. Let's call this flight (for example)...
    CYAZ to CYCD - C172

Then, from the simulator's main menu, click on Flights > Load to LOAD your saved flight. This will ensure that Michelle (Mike) understands everything there is to know about the trip.

Connect to Come Fly With Me
Presuming that you've already set-up TeamSpeak and FSHost (see Installation section), you now can connect to Come Fly With Me by saying to to co-pilot...
    "Come Fly With Me"

Michelle (Mike) will ask you what CHANNEL you will be using. Respond with (e.g.)...
    "Channel One"

Your Co-Pilot will provide you with the PASSORD to connect to FSHost.

NOTE: PRESS THE LEFT SHIFT KEY TO SPEAK WITH OTHER PILOTS

Letting Michelle Help You with the Take Off and Climb Out
Okay... you're ready to take off from the departing airport.   You ask Michelle to set the altitude, the runway heading, and ask her to set the flaps for take off.   You say to Michelle, "Takeoff Checklist".   She asks, "Would you like me to assist you?"   You respond with "Affirmative".

You apply full power and you're now rolling down the runway.   Once you pass the critical V1 speed, Michelle will say, "Rotate".   You pull up on the yoke ever so lightly. Voila... you're airborne!   If your aircraft has retractable gear, then once you've gained a positive rate of climb, Michelle automatically pulls up the gear!   As you gain altitude and settle in at a suitable rate of climb, Michelle automatically retracts the flaps. After the flaps have been retracted, say... "Auto-Pilot on."

Having Michelle Maintain your Airspeed and Rate of Climb
After engaging the Auto-Pilot, you ask Michelle to take care of the airspeed by saying, for example, "Air speed 110."   But Michelle does more than simply handle the airspeed! She'll also automatically controls the Vertical Rate of Climb to ensure that the aircraft stays above stall speed.   For example, in a Cessna C172 Skyhawk, she'll try to maintain a climb-out airspeed of between 80-85 knots.   This becomes far more important when climbing to higher altitudes.

Fly the Planned Route Using GPS/VOR
Now, let's all fly in beautiful formation by having the aircraft's Auto-Pilot fly the Pre-Planned GPS Route. You say... "Resume GPS Navigation"."   The aircraft will then turn and lock-on to the GPS route, leaving you more time to take in the beautiful Canadian scenery and freeing up your left-hand to push the LEFT SHIFT KEY to communicate via TeamSpeak with your fellow pilots.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you find that the aircraft wanders off of the GPS route, press the D key to reset the Heading Indicator.

Have fun and enjoy yourself.

Regards,
Robert
